2 POTA Activations by 3 JSCARC Members

This past Friday and Saturday, Oct 31 and Nov,  2  POTA activations by successfully deployed by Dan KG5PVP, John AB5SS and David KB5PGY.

Dan, our roving member who lives mostly in Troy, Montana but part-time in Houston, successfully activated from US 4505 at the Kootenai National Forest, Montana on Friday.

Dan KG5PVP (@ Kootenai National Forest):

“Had a very good/active POTA on Friday (36 contacts in about 45 minutes), although it was quite cold. Didn’t activate on Saturday due to very heavy rain and cold! No South Texas contacts again.

…  I was in the forest under a trap to protect from the rain, and those behind me are other members of the Lincoln County ARC.  Unfortunately I don’t have a pic of the setup, which was a 60’ end fed wire between two trees. I was operating my FT-991A and MFJ-929 tuner with a Bioenno LiFePO4 battery. “

Back here in Texas, John and David enjoyed a gap in the on-off seasonal rain showers to activate Brazos Bend State Park at US 2992.

John AB5SS (@ Hale Lake)

“Thanks for working me [conversing to KG5URA]. Wrapped up about 1:00pm and headed back. Looked for PGY as I left but he must have called it earlier.

… My first time to Brazos Bend. Nice Park! Lots of good sites to setup for POTA. Saw another camper with a JPC-12 vertical setup behind it.   My setup for this activation was the FT-891, DigiRig interface, & JPC-12 vertical. Haven’t counted QSO’s yet but likely over 60, mostly digital with some CW and SSB. “

David KB5PGY (@ Elm Lake)

 “I bugged out just after noon. 78 Q’s on 17m, 15m and 12m using FT8 QRP.”

George AD5CQ

“Made contact with John on 40m.  Could not hear either John or David (KB5PGY)
on any of the other band that they were spotted on.  Their signal takeoff angle must have been right over me.”
