WFD (Winter Field Day) /7

<Posted by our remote JSCARC member, Dan KG5PVP, operating from his QTH in Montana.>

I had a great WFD in NW Montana. I was able to easily make 65 contacts located across the country.  I hit 21 states, surprisingly, many of which were located in the mid-west.  I worked 10, 15, 20 and 40 meters during the day and evening on Saturday with a mix of SSB and CW (only 5 of these). I used CW skimmer together with my Flex Radio 6600, which really helped me to decode CW traffic quickly since a lot of operators were much faster than I could easily decode! I also found that pre-defining my calls, as well as most of the exchange, with macros was a great help and allowed me to respond faster than I could with my usual WPM keying rate. I worked mostly 10 and 15 meters and propagation was quite good during the day, but at night it was pathetic everywhere I looked. I worked 40 meters for about an hour between 22:30 and 23:30 and just got 4 contacts.

The WX was pretty good up here, with light snow in the morning but clearing in the afternoon. Temps were around 11-12 degF, which was a lot warmer than it was for most of the mid-west operators I talked with.
