4 Student Interns from the JSC Student Ham Radio Committee attended a JSCARC sponsored Soldering 101 class held in the W5RRR shack.
This is the first time we’ve conducted this class in the shack vs the adjacent Scuba room. Why move? We typically have many obstacles to temporarily clear out in the Scuba room and the air conditioning is poor. In the W5RRR shack, a 6′ folding table placed in the middle of the room worked well enough while enjoying the chilly AC piped into the room.
Jeff AB4ME, Kelvin K5KGH, Paul KJ5KIO, and Dave W5OC hosted the activity, with Jeff presenting a short Soldering Tutorial presentation to discuss soldering techniques, safety, and component orientations, resistor color codes.
Most of the group had little experience, so we proceeded with the easier 2 LED relaxation oscillator kit comprised of 12 components. All finished with working devices and with refined soldering skills.
Next week we will task the interns to continue to hone their skills on a much more advanced digital FM radio kit, including exposure to new and smaller components. Today’s participating interns were Hector, Karinna, Ricardo and Conor (lead).
We noted their interest to learn morse code and get licensed within the next few weeks. Because the Gilruth will remain open during the government shutdown, we’ll plan to proceed with weekly meetings on Tuesday 5:00pm.
