Welcome to the W5RRR/JSC Amateur Radio Club Photo Album.  The pictures are currently in no particular order.

Gil Carman (l), WA5NOM, and John Nickel (r), WD5EEV, get ready for a SAREX contact. There is no date associated with the original picture, so, it may be one of W5RRR's first SAREX contacts with the Space Shuttle orbiter or it may be a SAREX contact of importance. In the very upper-right corner of the picture is SAREX Committe Chairman, Roy Neal, K6DUE, (Retired NBC Science Reporter; now ARISS Chairman) watching Gil and John.

Karen Nickel, WD5EEU, works through the HF pileup she's created at W5RRR's ICOM IC-781/IC-4KL station.

Roy Neal, K6DUE, operating the Collins S-Line station working the pileups that develop whenever W5RRR gets on the air during Space Shuttle flights.

In the background are Dave McCarty, K5GN, and Steve Nace, KN5H, operating on some of the other bands.

Dave McCarty, K5GN (left), and Steve Nace, KN5H (right), operate the club's Collins KWM-380 and Steve's TS-830S.

Dale Martin, KG5U (left), and Steve Nace, KN5H (right), pose at the Collins S-Line and KWM-380 operating positions.

JSC Amateur Radio Club members assemble for a picture at one of the full-scale shuttle mockups for a SAREX team picture. Pictured are (from front to back, bottom to top): 1st row: Steve Nace, KN5H, (unknown), 2nd row: Ray Baker, K9RY, John Nickel, WD5EEV, Richard Fenner, W5AVI; 3rd row: Ken Schnell, W5OBR, Dale Martin, KG5U, Lou McFadin, W5DID; 4th row: Gary (unk), Owen Garriott, W5LFL; 5th row: Karen Nickel, WD5EEU, Lee Ruetz, WA5RDO, Earl Smith, W5EZ; 6th row: Kent Castle, W5OJ, (unk), (unk); 7th Row: unk, Tim Younts, KS5H; Top row: unk

Dale Martin, KG5U, (L), and NASA Astronaut, Dr. Owen Garriott, W5LFL (R), at one of the W5RRR HF station consoles. Owen got experience working pile-ups in preparation for his flight on Space Shuttle Mission STS-9 when he was the first NASA astronaut-ham to operate in space.

At the left, are (l-r) Dr. Owen Garriott, W5LFL, and Dr. Anthony England, W0ORE, former NASA Astronauts and ex-members of JSCARC as they visited the AMSAT booth at the 2002 Dayton Hamvention.  Owen first flew in space onboard Skylab II (1973), then, in 1973, Space Shuttle flight STS-9 onboard the orbiter Columbia.  During STS-9, Owen operated the first amateur radio station in space, making QSO's with earthbound hams.

In 1985, Tony operated the second U.S. amateur radio station in space during Space Shuttle flight STS-51F onboard the orbiter Columbia.  He contacted many amateur radio operators and performed the first two-way Slow-Scan Television (SSTV) up-/down-link between a manned orbiting spacecraft and the ground.

More pictures to follow as I run across and scan them.  If you have pictures of visitors to W5RRR, please contact me to coordinate their inclusion onto this page.
